So therein lies the question: how much are you treating periodontal disease?
Here’s a contrast for you as demonstrated by two different practices that I interacted with recently as a case study:
Practice “A”: Just over 10% of their active hygiene patients are in period treatment of some type. They have over 4,300 active hygiene patients so it takes 6 hygienists working 4 days a week to clean all those teeth!
Practice “B”: Nearly 40% of their active hygiene patients are perio patients. They have a thousand FEWER active hygiene patients (3,000) because it is a smaller practice, and they also have 6 hygienists working 4 days a week – treating disease! One of the biggest differences is that this practice has been through the No More Hygiene course and implemented the entire Modular Periodontal Therapy system. They are doing more treatment on fewer patients because they have the system setup and are truly treating disease.
So the real question is: how many hygienists does it take to truly treat periodontal disease? The more you do what needs to be done, i.e. treat disease, the fewer patients you need to keep a hygienist busy and productive.
I hope that helps instead of making things more confusing.
